To Newcastle

Possibly I should have mentioned this earlier, but I have been moving house and so forth. Anyway, I will be in Newcastle tomorrow and Saturday as a guest at the National Young Writers Festival. I’m on two panels:
From Your Notebook to the Bookshop: pathways to publication (Fri 12noon-2pm, City Hall Newcastle Room). The panel description says:
“Buy a van, borrow five grand off your parents, vanity-publish your first novel, then spend two years driving around Australia begging every bookstore in the country to stock you.” Let me say up front that I did none of those things! (although I did borrow a largish sum from my parents to go to Clarion). I’m looking forward to hearing the interesting stories from the other panellists.
Strength in Numbers: collective publishing and artist-run initiatives (Sat 1-3pm, Festival Club). I guess I’ll be talking about Clarion South and other workshops I’ve been involved in organising.
For further reference, the website is here: www.youngwritersfestival.org
I went to the first NYWF in 1998 when I was in high school, and again in 2000 with school friend and fellow writer Chris Currie, so this will undoubtedly bring back interesting memories.
If you happen to be going, and you happen to see this post, please say hi.

Sale

I just found out I sold a story to Strange Horizons. It is my first piece of science fiction, and my first sale to what is known in the biz as a “professional market.” I hope to write a novel somewhat in the same vein, the novel after the next one. The site is here www.strangehorizons.com, but the story won’t appear until early next year.
