In Which I Am Declared Quietly Subversive
That’s what Trent said about me at the launch, or rather, about the book. In fact he said many many nice and wonderful things and then I blabbed on in an inarticulate manner for some time. Books were sold, hummus (home made by Ron Serdiuk) was eaten. I signed so many books that by the end I became illiterate and even wrote Merry Xmas in one of them.
Thanks so much to everyone who came. I wish I had got a chance to talk to people for more than one minute, but it was not to be. I was so touched to see my old colleagues, my students, my physio and my neurosurgeon, and all the friends who I haven’t kept in touch with as well as I should have. I told a joke about my dentist (which in no way painted him as a villain, I hasten to add).
Marianne de Pierres sent some beautiful flowers, which have been sitting on my kitchen desk all week looking bright and smelling lily-like.
Many many thanks to the lads/blokes at Pulp Fiction for organising it.

Change of Venue for Book Launch
Due to some issues with the Anzac Square Arcade body corporate (part of the new cruelty, you know how it is), the book launch of The Silver Road will now be held at the Queensland Law Society Auditorium, 4th Floor, Law Society House, 179 Ann St. Same time. This is next to the Palace Backpackers building, so not 100m from Anzac Square Arcade.
RSVP still the same to Pulp Fiction on 07 3236 2750
Hope to see you there!
Launched!
Well, the launch went very well, thanks for asking. I was very nervous but seeing as I didn’t have to do anything but sign books that didn’t impact on the proceedings too much. I made many of the handwriting equivalent of a typo, but I am the author so I guess that is okay.
Margo Lanagan said very nice things about my book (thank you, Margo!) and I signed many books. My aunt Sally bought a box of ten!
Here is a picture of me avoiding being photograped, taken by Cat Sparks.

Continuum 4 was a great convention and I really enjoyed it even though I only went to three program items and missed one whole day. I’ve put a couple more of Cat’s photos on the photos page.
The Big Day
So today is the official publication date of my first novel. I have not yet seen a copy in a shop but a student reported to me today that he saw one in Dymocks Chermside, and a friend said they saw one in a Borders in Adelaide.
I wish I could say that I celebrated but in fact I spent the day walking back and forth from the Wesley Hospital, stressing about getting ready to go to Melbourne, and teaching. When I got home there were some flowers on the verandah. My first thought was: who thinks I’m sick? (they are a bit behind). Second thought was: who is my secret admirer? The flowers were from Laura Harris, my publisher at Penguin. Thanks, Laura!
